Sarah’s Encore Career – A Leap Of Faith

After three successful careers spanning four decades — as an operations manager and bank  Vice President, a licensed clinical social worker working with families involved in the juvenile justice system, and a human resource management consultant helping individuals and organizations to be more successful – I have taken a leap of faith to shift my primary identity from that of a management consultant to focusing on my other identities: mother, wife, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend.

Sarah Birnbach, Writer and Author

I confess that I’m uncomfortable with uncertainty – with not knowing what each next day is going to look like. But I have often jumped into the unknown.

I’ve leaped from an  airplane (with a parachute), jumped from boats with scuba gear including jumping into complete darkness on my first night dive, and repelled from the cliffs of Yosemite with only a low-stretch rope and a harness.

I left a steady-paying C-suite job in commercial banking to jump into business as an entrepreneur. I have always landed on my feet.

I have a fragile confidence that shifting the lens of the camera from an external view to an internal one will bring things into focus as I begin my “encore career” – as both a retiree and full-time writer.

The German-language poet, Rainer Maria Rilke, wrote:

“Be patient toward all that is unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions . . . the point is to live everything. Live the questions now.”

I am re-shaping my thinking from aging to living, from growing old to growing whole and to living the questions.
